Your West Coast Dream Trip Awaits

Looking for a stunning coastal escape? My friend and I visited Big Sur and Carmel-by-the-Sea in August for a girls’ trip, and it was pure magic—sunny skies, highs in the upper 70s, and breathtaking scenery. Whether you’re dreaming of quaint towns or rugged coastlines, this stretch of California has it all. Here’s how to plan your perfect trip, with tips and must-see stops from our adventure.
Where to Stay: Carmel-by-the-Sea Basecamp
We chose the Best Western Carmel’s Town House Lodge in Carmel-by-the-Sea, and it was ideal for us. This no-frills, clean hotel is steps from shops and restaurants, with free breakfast included. Note: There’s no A/C, but a fan and open window kept us comfortable—nights cool off nicely in August.
For a more luxurious stay, consider:
Hyatt Carmel Highlands - elegant and highly recommended.
Carmel Valley Ranch - an upscale retreat with rave reviews.
I can match you with the perfect hotel based on your budget and vibe—whether cozy and central or high-end and serene.
Top Activities in Carmel-by-the-Sea
Carmel is packed with charm. Here’s what we loved:
Carmel Beach: A scenic spot for a leisurely walk.
17-Mile Drive: A must-do! This coastal route passes Spanish Bay and Pebble Beach golf courses with jaw-dropping ocean views.
Tor House: Drive by this stunning historic home in Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Carmel Mission Basilica: A beautiful church with striking architecture—great for history buffs.
Wine Tasting: Sip at Scratch or Albatross Ridge tasting rooms downtown.
Point Lobos State Reserve: Ideal for sunset hikes—don’t miss it!
Big Sur Highlights
Just south of Carmel, Big Sur’s rugged beauty is unforgettable. Plan these stops:
Bixby Creek Bridge: Pull over for iconic photos of this iconic bridge.
Pfeiffer Beach: Famous for its purple sand—a unique sight.
Big Sur Bakery: Grab delicious pastries for a quick treat.
McWay Falls: A short walk from the parking lot reveals stunning ocean vistas.
Nepenthe: A pricey but must-visit restaurant with incredible views—perfect for lunch or drinks on the outdoor patio. Go early to beat the crowds!
Hiking Adventures
For outdoor lovers, these trails are a must:
Point Lobos State Reserve: Try the Sea Lion Point Trail (0.5 miles) or Bird Island Trail—easy and scenic.
Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park: The Pfeiffer Falls Trail (2 miles) offers redwoods and a waterfall.
Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park: A short walk to McWay Falls delivers postcard-worthy views.
Dining in Carmel-by-the-Sea
We savored these spots—add them to your plan:
Anton & Michel: Great for lunch.
Little Napoli: Delicious Italian dinner—their pizza is a standout!
Vesuvio: Same chef as Little Napoli; dine on the rooftop for a special evening.
Mission Ranch: Owned by Clint Eastwood—hit cocktail hour at 4 PM, then stay for dinner with gorgeous views.
Tuck Box: A cozy breakfast spot.
Why Use a Travel Planner?
Our trip was a blast, but coordinating hotels, dining, and driving routes took effort—especially with Big Sur’s winding roads and limited cell service. A travel planning partner can streamline your itinerary, secure reservations, and recommend hidden gems (like the best wine tasting rooms or sunset spots). Let me handle the details so you can focus on making memories.
