When I think of fall, I think of vibrant landscapes of fall foliage. Nature in transition as the cooler air evaporates the summer heat away. When I think of a destination well known for this experience, I think of New England. I think of a New England fall road trip.
Our family embarked on a memorable long weekend journey to New England at the end of September, eagerly anticipating the vibrant fall colors, locally known as "leaf peeping." I'll say it loud and proud, we are Leaf Peepers! With fall being a peak season, we strategically flew into Boston Logan Airport and secured a rental car for our expedition. Despite a slightly extended drive due to rush hour traffic, the mesmerizing landscapes made it all worthwhile. Below, we share our top recommendations for your own New England fall adventure.
Hot tip! Don't fly into Boston during rush hour with the idea you'll have a smooth exit.
First Stop: Bar Harbor, Maine
We checked into the Harborside Hotel in Bar Harbor, a stunning waterfront accommodation offering breathtaking views of Frenchman Bay. Conveniently situated within walking distance of downtown Bar Harbor, we spent two unforgettable nights (and foggy mornings) here. The property was well maintained and staffed for a great experience.
Bar Harbor Highlights:
Shore Path Adventure: Embark on a leisurely stroll along the picturesque Frenchman's Harbor, commencing at Agamont Park near the Town Pier. Enjoy the scenic views of the waterfront, boats, and charming waterfront houses. Look out for informative signs along the path, offering insights into the history of Bar Harbor and its captivating sights. More on the Shore Path Adventure.
Downtown Dining: Savor delectable meals at Galyn's or Geddy's. Geddy's provides a laid-back, family-friendly atmosphere, while Galyn's offers a more intimate experience. Be sure to try Geddy's famous lobster roll and their signature Blueberry Giggle Juice (featuring Prosecco, Stoli blueberry vodka, and blueberries). Explore the town's charming shops and quaint bars, as well as numerous breweries. We highly recommend breakfast at the Irish pub, Paddy's, and indulging in their scrumptious blueberry pancakes.
Land Bridge Adventure: Experience the intriguing Land Bridge, allowing you to walk to Bar Island during low tide. This unique excursion was conveniently located next to our hotel. An NPS trail, learn more here.
Acadia National Park: Discover the park's most scenic spots accessible by car, perfect for families. Our recommended route includes Eagle Lake Overlook, Cadillac Mountain (remember to reserve a pass), Jordan Pond (ideal for a leisurely stroll), Otter Cliff, Thunder Hole, and Sand Beach. Although we refrained from hiking due to our young companion, the park offers an array of hiking trails for more adventurous visitors. Learn more about Acadia National Park here.

Must-Try Foods in Bar Harbor:
Blueberry pie
Blueberry beer
Blueberry pancakes
Lobster
Lobster rolls
On the way in or out of Bar Harbor, be sure to visit Downeast Lobster for mouthwatering lobster rolls, blueberry pie, and delightful Bloody Marys. When you get there, ask for Larry. He'll give you the inside scoop on lobster in the area.

Next Stop: Lincoln, New Hampshire
After leaving Bar Harbor, we embarked on a scenic 4.5-hour drive to Lincoln, New Hampshire, our overnight stop, relishing the beauty of White Mountain National Forest. Along the way, we had the privilege of witnessing a moose swimming across a lake – an unforgettable moment. Our overnight stay was at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Lincoln, nestled at the foothills of the White Mountains. This modern hotel offers a convenient location, with a pizza place and ice cream shop right across the street. Though our stay was brief, we enjoyed our time there.
Although we did not spend much time in Lincoln, New Hampshire, it was obvious from the drive in and out, popular activities include:
Camping
Hiking
Spin and Fly Fishing
Mountain Biking
UTV Rentals
Nighttime Moose Sighting Tours

Next Stop: Stowe, Vermont
Nestled between rolling green hills covered in autumn leaves, our fall visit to Stowe, Vermont was nothing short of amazing. This charming New England town, with its picturesque streets and cozy cafes, welcomes visitors with open arms. We explored the heart of Stowe, wandering along a quaint path that led us through a local park filled with families, cyclists, and even someone reading in a tree with low hanging branches. Two iconic stops in/near Stowe:
The Von Trapp House, once home to the famous Sound of Music family
Ben & Jerry's Factory and Tour (ask about their Broccoli Cheddar flavor)
Just when we thought New England couldn't be more fall-centric, we drove by a sign for a pumpkin chucking contest. Although we did not observe this event, we're sure it would have been worth it. Stowe's blend of small-town charm and unparalleled beauty makes it a perfect destination for a fall adventure.

Stowe Sights to Explore:
Cold Hollow Cider Mill: Take a self-guided tour of the cider mill and witness the making of apple cider donuts. Sample both the cider and donuts, and explore the adjacent gift shop. The mill's restaurant opens at 11 am, featuring hard cider tasting.
Ben and Jerry's Factory: We highly recommend booking a factory tour ahead of time to explore this iconic ice cream brand's origins. The tour lasts 30 minutes, concluding with a free sample. Don't forget to explore the scenic grounds, which include a flavor graveyard and a playground.
Stowe Maple Products: Experience the unique flavors of maple syrup and browse a selection of maple-infused products. The guy working here while we visited also gave some great fishing advice.
Trapp Family Lodge: Revel in the stunning rolling hills while savoring a delightful meal. The bratwurst and grass-fed burger come highly recommended.
Percy Farm Corn Maze: Enjoy a family-friendly adventure on the edge of town, with an $8 fee for adults and free entry for kids. The maze typically takes 30-40 minutes to complete.
Barnes Camp Visitor Center: Explore the boardwalk and relish the breathtaking views of autumn foliage. You might also catch glimpses of wildlife.
Smugglers Notch Visitor Center: Take in great views and enjoy some bouldering activities, ideal for the little ones.
Moss Glen Falls: Embark on a 1-mile round trip, an easy hike offering picturesque scenery.
Downtown Stowe: Stroll along a scenic path in the recreation park, which offers a backdrop of the iconic church, often featured in Stowe's pictures. Explore the charming shops and dine in cozy restaurants.

Recommended Restaurants in Stowe:
Piecasso Pizza Parlor: Located on the outskirts of downtown Stowe, offering abundant outdoor seating.
Trapp Family Lodge Restaurant: If possible, secure an outdoor table to enjoy scenic views, or the bar area also provides great vistas.
Last Stop: Boston, Massachusetts
We concluded our New England fall road trip with a drive back to Boston and stayed near the airport at the Hilton Garden Inn. This convenient choice is especially suited for early morning flights, offering a shuttle service to the airport. The hotel's restaurant also impressed us with its quality. In total, we spent four outstanding days in New England, a timeframe that can be easily adapted to suit your preferences.
